1282184 Adder C W NELSON Jnr 8 June 1970 [13 Aug 1969] 27634/70 Headings G4A and G4H The invention relates to an adder for producing ternary coded signals from data coded in " signed binary," i.e. where " 1 " and " 0 " are represented by " + + " and " - - ." Digital binary data is stored in registers A and B in signed binary as shown in Fig. 9. The + and - signs are added according to the table of contents shown in Fig. 9, the contents of one register being added to the corresponding contents of the other register shifted by one half bit position. The registers A and B are coupled by a loop of resistors as shown, the resistors also being coupled to register C. Voltages applied to the resistors by contacts at the registers A, B determine the voltages at register C. For A 1 = -, B 1 = - therefore C 2 = -. For A 2 = +, B 1 = - C 3 = 0 and for A 2 = + B 2 = 0, C 4 =+. C 1 for which no position in the B register corresponds to the A register is obtained by adding B8 to A1 and C17 is arranged to be identical to B8. The sum in the C register can be easily decoded into its component parts and a decoder is illustrated in Figs. 10, 10a, 10b, 10c, Fig. 10, of which is shown. C17 is directly connected to B8 via a contact 121 and the value of C17 is used to operate relay 124 and contact 125. The value of C16 closes or opens contact 126 to operate relay 127 and as shown contact 128 to supply a voltage to contact 125. This feeds terminal 130 A8 and relay 131. In a similar manner C15 operates relay 134 so that a voltage is fed via contacts 135 and 132 to terminal 137 B7 and relay 138.
