Method for melting waste thermoplastic strip or fibrous material comprises feeding steam over the plastic at a temperature significantly above its melting point. The molten plastic is entrained by the steam, which is then separated off and recycled. An Independent claim is included for apparatus for carrying out the method comprising a blower (1) which circulates the steam in a closed circuit, nozzles (2, 4) for injecting liquid into the steam, a heater (3) connected to a melting chamber (6) and a heated separation section (8) in which steam is separated from the molten material.
