Tricyclic compounds are new. Tricyclic compounds are of formula (I). P-Q = a carbon-carbon single or double bond; A1, A2 = a single bond, 1,4-cyclohexylene, optionally substituted by 2-4F atoms in which non-neighboring CH2 groups are optionally replaced by -O- and/or -S-, a 1,4-phenylene, optionally substituted by 1-2F atoms and 1 or 2 CH groups are replaced by N, a 1,4-bicyclo(2.2.2)octylene group, a napthalene-2,6-diyl group, optionally substituted by up to 2F atoms, 1,2,3,4-tetrahydronapthalene-2,6-diyl group, optionally substituted by up to 2F atoms or decahydronapthalene-2,6-diyl; R = 1-12C alkyl, optionally substituted by halogen whereby non-neighboring CH2 groups are optionally replaced by -O-, -S-, -CO- and two neighboring CH2 groups are replaced by -CHCH-, -CFCF-, -COO-, -CHCH-, -CFCF- or -CC-; X, Y = H, F, Cl, -CN, -NCS, -OCHF2, -OCF3, -SF5, 1-7C alkyl, optionally substituted by halogen whereby two non-neighboring CH2 groups are optionally replaced by -O- or -S- and two neighboring groups are optionally replaced by -COO-, -CHCH- or -CFCF- Independent claims are also included for: (1) a liquid crystal medium (II) comprising at least two liquid crystal components containing at least one tricyclic compound (I); and (2) a liquid crystal display element containing the medium (II).
