A spring loaded chuck has a conical socket (2) into which the conical end (7) of the tool is inserted. The end of the tool has a profiled tip which is gripped by the jaws of a tensioning shaft (5) which is normally held in the retracted position, with closed jaws, by a spring (8). The spring is compressed by a central ram (22) pressing onto the end of the shaft. A second set of springs (15) with a stronger force, is compressed by a larger ram (20) concentric to the first ram. The combination of the two springs ensures a secure grip.
