Production of graft copolymers by radical polymerization of monomer onto a polymer in a liquid phase comprising a liquid diluent, comprises polymerization in the presence of substance that acts as phase mediator between diluent and monomer, provided that mixture of diluent and phase mediator does not dissolve or swell the graft copolymer product. The polymer is insoluble in the liquid phase and the monomer is insoluble in the diluent. An Independent claim is also included for a process for producing an ion-exchange membrane, comprising introducing ionic groups into a graft copolymer produced as above.
