Production of a regular arrangement of nanocrystalline magnetic particles comprises stabilizing magnetic particles in a colloidal solution; wetting a substrate drop-wise with the solution at an angle of less than 45 deg ; and magnetophoretically depositing the particles onto the substrate in a magnetic field having a field strength of 1-10 T and specified orientation. Preferred Features: The field strength of the magnetic field is 6-10 T and can be changed during the magnetophoretic deposition. The magnetic particles have a size of 3-20 nm and have an oxide or metal coating.
