The fingerprint image acquisition apparatus (10) has an image processor (14) that has a controller (14b) for executing a process to divide a fingerprint image into several unit blocks of predetermined size, and to divide a fingerprint image into center region and peripheral region. Each region includes a predetermined number of unit blocks which are subdivided into two or more blocks. The controller watches the state of an image buffer (14c) to determine if the fingerprint image is entered and stored to the image buffer. The fingerprint image is stored in a video memory (14d) if the storage of the fingerprint image is confirmed. The image buffer stores the digital signal from an analog-to-digital (A-D) converter (14a) which transforms and outputs the fingerprint image from a charge-coupled device (CCD) unit (13) into digital signal. An Independent claim is also included for the fingerprint image acquisition method.
