A method of analysing a composite image 10 that includes an image 11 of a bank note within an image 12 of a background provides an estimate of the coordinates of the corners of the note. The composite image 10 is scanned along successive lines 13, until a portion of the image 11 is detected, each successive iteration of the searching step scanning along a line successively closer to the bank note. An improved estimate of the coordinates of the corners is determined by detecting points at the edges of the note, obtaining lines of best fits to the edge points and finding the intersections of these lines. The image is compared to a set of stored reference images, and a probability that the note is of a particular type is evaluated. |
