PURPOSE: A client-server connection method, a load balancer operation method, and a packet transmission method are provided to connect a client to a server by a load balancer associated with a plurality of servers. CONSTITUTION: Upon receiving a TCP(Transmission Control Protocol) packet requesting to establish a connection with a web site hosted by a server farm(50), a load balancer responds with a respective TCP packet so as to establish a connection between a client and the load balancer(52). One or more of the packets received on the established connection, e.g., the first packet of an HTTP(HyperText Transfer Protocol) request message or the one or more packets including a URL(Uniform Resource Locator), are examined(54). A server to handle the requests of the client is selected(56). An available connection to the selected server is then spliced to the connection between the load balancer and the client, and the examined packet is forwarded, in accordance with the splicing, to the selected server(58). The handling of the connection by the load balancer then moves to a forwarding state in which packets received on the spliced connection are forwarded in accordance with the splicing(60). When the first packet of a new request is received(64), the packet is examined to select the server for servicing the new request(66). If a different server is selected(67), the splicing of the client connection with the server connection to the previously selected server is canceled(68).
