PURPOSE: A composition comprising a water-soluble chitosan and an Inula Helenium L. extract exhibiting a broad antimicrobial spectrum against mold as well as bacteria and yeast is provided which has mild and nonirritant properties and can be widely used in the field of food, cosmetics and medicine. CONSTITUTION: The composition prepared from naturally occurring plant materials comprises 0.01 to 99.99% by weight of water-soluble chitosan and 0.01 to 99.99% by weight of an Inula Helenium L. extract. For example, roots of Inula Helenium L. are cut into small pieces, extracted at 50 to 80deg.C for 3 to 10 days, aged for 3 to 7 days after filtering and freeze-dried. The natural material containing a chitosan extract and the Inula Helenium L. extract is tested for antimicrobial activity against gram positive, gram negative bacteria, yeast and mold in a skin lotion, milk lotion and cream formulation.
