<p>Process of oxidising cpds contg. vicinal diols and opt. carboxylic acid gps. i.e. cpds having structure I or II: R3-CH2-CHOH-CHOH-CH2-R4 (where R1, R2 are H or various organic substituents e.g. aliphatic, aromatic araliphatic etc. and R3, R4 are H, alkyl, aryl, carboxylic acids or esters, hydroxyl or ether). The oxidn is achieved passing O2 or a gas contg. O2 through I or II in an inert solvent in the presence of =1 mole Co cpd. or Co ions per 100 moles I or II and in the presence of 0.1-0.3 moles per 100 moles I or II, of a percarboxylic acid at 10 degrees-110 degrees C, pref. 40-90 degrees C. High yields of pure acids are obtd. by this process.</p> |
