The distributed telephone exchange incorporates a connection (2) for coupling to an external telephone network (4). It forms in relation to the external network, a conventional local telephone exchange (PBX). To the local data network (5) further units such as printers (7) are connected for receiving telefax messages and similar. The transmission of data on the network occurs in accordance with existing Internet standards. The local data network has at least one server computer (5) functioning as a central unit. The server computer comprises a data register covering data network addresses and telephone numbers for the telephone apparatus connected to the local data network. It is therefore possible to convert between direct conversion of addresses to telephone numbers and vice versa.
