PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To develop a synthetic coating film good in finish properties and chipping properties in forming the coating film of a car body. SOLUTION: A coating film forming method is characterized by forming the coating film by a process 1 for applying a cationic electrodeposition paint (A), which contains a conductive agent in its composition and forms the cured coating film with a resistivity of 10<12>Ω.cm or less, to the metal article to be coated of the car body and washing the obtained coating film before curing and drying the same, a process 2 for applying a cationic electrodeposition paint (B) of which the coating color is a chromatic color or white to the article to be coated having the cationic electrodeposition paint (A) and washing the obtained coating film before curing and drying the same and a process 3 for further applying a topcoating paint (C) to the cured coating film and curing and drying the obtained coating film.
