PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thermal transfer printer that can use both types of ink ribbons having different wax type and resin type components and obtain a clear and stable printed material without density variation. SOLUTION: This thermal transfer printer has a mechanism that can vary a pressure of a thermal head so that the printer can use both of the wax type and resin type ink ribbons. Each of a temperature of the inner section of the printer and a temperature of a thermal head heat radiating plate are made to be high at a constant level so that a size of a printed dot is stabilized, thereby achieving high quality printing by suppressing density variation. As the temperature of the heat radiating plate is set such that the temperature of each the end sections is higher than that of the central section, it is possible to suppress density variation that may be created at the connected portion in the printing.
