The impact survival cell (6) for motor vehicle occupants is connected to the vehicle chassis by hinges (16). A floor (7) of the cell is fixed to the chassis (1) by releasable connections. During a collision a sensor for impact mounted in the front bumper (19) releases the cell and inflates air bags to tilt the cell upwardly.
