1388047 Measuring forces on vehicle wheels DUNLOP Ltd 13 March 1972 [22 March 1971] 11673/72 Heading G1N The forces and moments generated by a wheel on a vehicle driven on a road surface are measured by supporting the shaft on spaced rigid supports A, B, Fig.1, and measuring the forces on the supports in the X, Y, Z directions. Knowing the distances l, a and r the forces R, S, P and moments M x , My can be calculated and used for determining wheel unbalance. Each support A, B comprises a hub 11, Fig. 3, ring 13 and arms 7-10, 7'-10' rigidly attached to the hub 11 and resiliently attached to the ring 13 by slots 3 and a local reduction in cross-section as at 7a. Each arm carries two strain gauge elements x 1 -x 4 , y 1 -y 4 , z 1 -z 4 , inter-connected in groups to separate bridges. Thus strain gauges x 1 -x 4 are mounted on arms 7, 7' to be stressed by force XB in the X direction only, since the arms 7, 7' are resilient in the X and Z directions. |
