PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain compound oxide powder having a large specific surface area and pore volume after high temperature endurance without losing oxygen storage/release ability, which a single oxide has. SOLUTION: The compound oxide powder has a form that a 1st metal oxide having the oxygen storage/release ability is held as fine particles in an island state on a 2nd metal oxide different from the 1st metal oxide and has characteristics that the fine pore volume is >=2 cm<2> /g and the particle diameter of the 1st metal oxide after being exposed to a high temperature of >=900 deg.C is <=30 nm. The grain growth is hardly occurred because the 1st metal oxide is held as the fine particles in the island state on the 2nd metal oxide and the 1st metal oxide and the 2nd metal oxide are separated from each other to suppress the contact with each other.
