PURPOSE: A picture synchronous signal generator of an MPEG motion picture decoding system is provided to automatically extract picture display information from an input video stream to immediately generate a cycle required for a corresponding picture without time delay even when cycle information of the input stream is changed. CONSTITUTION: A picture synchronous signal generator of an MPEG motion picture decoding system includes a video parameter detector(10), a cycle calculator(20), a counter(30), and a comparator(40). The video parameter detector detects a frame rate and picture structure parameter from an input video stream. The cycle calculator calculates the cycle of a picture synchronous signal using the frame rate and picture structure parameter. The counter counts system clocks corresponding to the cycle of the picture synchronous signal. The comparator generates the picture synchronous signal when the counter counts the system clocks corresponding to the cycle calculated by the cycle calculator.
