PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recorder and a recording method that record identifica tion information of a recording medium able to be reproduced by a similar reproducing method to that of an index file and to provide a program to make a computer implement the recording method and a computer-readable recording medium for recording the program. SOLUTION: The recorder is configured with a generating means 19 that extracts abstract information relating to each of a plurality of files recorded on a recording medium and generates the index file containing a plurality of the extracted abstract information items in a prescribed form in cross-reference with real data of a plurality of the files, a recording medium identification information housing means 19 that houses the identification information to identify the recoding medium in the index file in the prescribed form, and recording means 32, 33 that record the index file to the recording medium.
