PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To shorten the time necessary for the detection of a loaded disk after a disk exchange in a disk changer which can load a large number of disks on a rotary tray. SOLUTION: A sensor 104d for detecting the presence or absence of a disk is arranged in the vicinity of a disk exchange door 10a. When the disk exchange door 10a is opened, a microcomputer 106 clears disk loading information on a slot in a disk exchangeable region enclosed by radius vectors shown in signs A1 and A2 in Figure. Subsequently, when a rotary tray 101 rotates in the state where the disk exchange door 10a is opened, the microcomputer 106 clears the presence or absence data of the loaded disk of a slot newly moved in the disk exchangeable region by rotation movement of the rotary tray 10. When the slot whose presence or absence data of the loaded disk are cleared passes on the sensor 104d for detecting the presence or absence of a disk, data outputted from the sensor 104d and indicating the presence or absence of the loaded disk on the slot are detected and stored in a RAM 106a.
