Stable monoperphthalic acid prepn - from phthalic anhydride and peroxide using efficient drying

In the prepn of stable monoperphthalic acid (MPA) by reacting phthalic anhydride and a peroxide cpd, in a non-oxidisable solvent in which the MPA is not soluble using an alkaline catalyst, acidifying and separating the precipitate as in FR 1452737 the catalyst used is an alkaline earth catalyst only slightly soluble in the reaction media, pref. oxide or hydroxides partic MgO. The solvent is pref. dichloro-1,2-ethane. A filler chosen from Na2SO4, MgSO4 and MgSO4H2O is added to the dried product to remove traces of water. The product is used as a low temp bleaching agent and as an epoxidation agent.
