Title cpds. of formula (where Z = halogenated naphthyl or 2-X2-3-X1-4-Y-5-X3-6-X4-phenyl where Y = -NO2, CF3, halo or alkyl and X1, X2, X3, X4 = halo) are prepd. by reaction of a 2-amino-5-nitro-alpha, alpha, alpha-trifluorotoluene with a halogenated naphthalene or benzene deriv. in the presence of a base or by reaction of a halogenated naphthylamine or phenylamine deriv. with a 2-halo-5-nitro-alpha, alpha, alpha-trifluorotoluene. The cpds. are esp. useful as insecticides, algicides and for the control of bacterial and crytogamic plant diseases.
