A method of assisting an enterprise in the conduct of business including: selecting a business type from a first data structure representing a plurality of business types; selecting one or more key performance indicator types from a second data structure representing key performance indicator types applicable to the business type selected from said first data structure; inputting data for said one or more selected key performance indicator types for the enterprise being assisted; selecting one or more key performance indicators corresponding to said one or more selected key performance indicators from a third data structure representing standard key performance indicators relevant to business types represented in said first data structure; comparing said one or more actual key performance indicators with corresponding respective standard key performance indicators selected from said third data structure to provide a variance for the or each of said one or more key performance indicators; and selecting one or more second parameters from a fourth data structure representing parameters relevant to possible causes of said variance.
