A telescopic mast assembly (1) having a number of mast sections (5a, 5b, 5c, 5d, 5e) nested within one another, operated by a drive member (10) connected to at least one of the mast sections. The drive member (10) is stored on a reel (15) and can be wound onto and unwound from the reel (15) using a motor (19) connected to a drive cog (21) that can contact the drive member (10) to move it back and forth linearly. The drive member (10) is constructed from a material which has a first state with a flat cross section (17) and a second state with a curved cross section (18) such that the drive member (10) is in its first state when contained on the reel (15) and is in its second state when it has been unwound from the reel (15).
