A process is provided for the preparation of mandelic acid derivatives. The process comprises the steps of: (a) stereoselectively cyanating a compound of Formula (2) to yield the corresponding cyanohydrin; (b) hydrolysing the product of step (a) to the corresponding compound of Formula (1) wherein X is a substituent.
