The suction slot (16) of a sliver compacting device on a drafting system has an end region near the exit nip (20) that is wider than the middle working region. The increase in width can extend to both sides of the slot and be rectangular or circular in shape. It can be separated from the middle region by solid transverse section and can be incorporated into a hardened reinforcing section.
