An adapter body (22) is substituted for a rotary flask in a conventional rotary vacuum evaporation apparatus for evaporation of volvents from short height vials, such as in the recovery of compounds produced by solid support reaction techniques. The adapter body comprises a chamber (26) for receiving short height vials (24), a neck (37) for connection to the vacuum head of a condenser, and a closure for sealing the chamber. All seals are pressure tight for maintaining a vacuum in the system during the evaporation operation. The vials are sealed by a filter element (44) which permits the escape of vapor and retains liquid so that cross contamination between vials as the result of bumping is avoided.
