Shaped silicon carbide articles - made by deposition onto laminated carbonised cellulose structure

A method of making articles of SiC of multilayer form, is as follows: several thin cellulose layers are assembled into a composite structure, this is carbonised in a non-oxidising atmos., then the resultant C structure is silicon carbonised, producing a SiC structure of the same shape as the original cellulose structure. Prefd. cellulose material is paper sheets, e.g. alternately flat and corrugated layers spooled around a core; sheets may be adhesive-coated, or impregnated with phenolic, epoxy, formaldehyde, furane or other resins.
