PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for manufacturing a hydroxy compound at a low cost on an industrial scale, free from a problem of a drainage treatment and capable of selectively removing acyl groups even in the case where a carboxylic acid ester having >=2 acyl groups in a molecule is used. SOLUTION: A carboxylic acid ester and an aliphatic alcohol are subjected to a transesterification in the presence of a hydrosulfite compound catalyst.
