Umbrella base station repeater communicates with mobiles in base station shadow areas

An umbrella base station 21 has a coverage area covering the predetermined coverage areas of a set of other base stations. A remote repeater 22 is situated in a null area which is located between the base stations and communicates with the umbrella base station using an idle frequency band from among the frequency bands used by the base stations for communication with the mobiles within their respective coverage areas. Within the repeater the communications with the umbrella station are frequency converted to the frequency corresponding to at least one of the frequency bands used by the base station transceivers to perform communications with a mobile situated within the null area.
