PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of producing aromatic hydroxy compound in high selectivity, as a high catalyst turnover number is maintained, by using economical and clean oxidant, hydrogen peroxide. SOLUTION: An aromatic compound of the following general formula (1) is directly oxidized with hydrogen peroxide in solvent in the presence of a heteropolyacid catalyst to produce an aromatic hydroxy compound represented by the following general formula (2) (R1-R4 are each H, a 1-4C alkyl, phenyl, a 1-4C alkoxy, carboxyl, a 1-4C alkoxycarbonyl, a halogen, nitro or cyano, R1 and R2 and R3 and R4 may form together a phenyl ring, respectively; Z is C-R5 or H where R5 is H, a 1-4C alkyl, phenyl, a 1-4C alkoxy, carboxyl, a 1-4C alkoxycarbonyl, a halogen, nitro or cyano). |
