PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve such a problem that the excess or deficiency of heating amount or a defective heating balance on the right and left side occurs in splice of optical fibers. SOLUTION: A pair of optical fibers 1a and 1b butted and arranged between discharge electrodes 10 are heated and fusion bonded by electric discharge between the discharge electrodes 10. The index value of core deformation is calculated on the basis of the changed parts of the cores of the optical fibers 1a and 1b by fusion measured at a measuring position separated from the splicing part of the optical fibers 1a and 1b in the axial direction. A current value supplied to the discharge electrodes 10 and the butting position of the optical fibers 1a and 1b to the discharge electrodes are adjusted so that the optical fibers may be connected at a low splice loss within the optimal range of the index value of core deformation.
