PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technique for asymmetrically reducing only a carbonyl group in high yield while keeping an ester functional group unstable to a base as it is by using a stable and highly active complex. SOLUTION: This method for producing an optically active alcohol comprises asymmetrically reducing the carbonyl compound represented by formula (2): R1-(C=O)-COOR2 (2) (R1 and R2 are each a hydrocarbon group or heterocycle group which may have a substituent, may be same or different, and can form a ring by bonding to each other) by using the transition metal complex represented by formula (1): M(L)m(Y)nXl (1) (M is a transition metal; L is a monodentate or bidentate phosphine; Y is an optically active nitrogen compound; X is hydride, a chlorine atom or a bromine atom; m, n and l are each an integer of 1-3) by a hydrogenation reduction reaction. |
