PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To quantitatively determine purity of a fine fibrous carbon particulate such as a carbon nanotube. SOLUTION: A carbon sample comprising the carbon nanotube and a other carbon allotropes as imputities is heated and held for 20 seconds at 500 deg.C, 600 deg.C, and 900 deg.C of temperatures respectively. The cabon nanotube is burnt at 600 deg.C, and the other carbon allotropes are burnt at 500 deg.C or 900 deg.C. A carbon monoxide amount and a carbon dioxide amount generated in the combustoin hereinbefore are measured to calculate amounts of the carbon allotropes burnt in the respective temperatures, and the purity of the carbon nanotube is evaluated as a ratio of the carbon nanotube to all the carbon amount.
