PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To remove residue of waste ink economically and effectively from an electrostatic ink drop detector in an ink jet print mechanism. SOLUTION: The waste ink removing system comprises a frame 50, a base 62 supported slidably by the frame 50 while supporting a dielectric electrostatic detecting section 66, and an actuator 52 for moving the base 62 between an operating position and a containing position. The waste ink removing system further comprises an absorber 76 supported rotatably by the frame 50 and touching the dielectric electrostatic detecting section 66 selectively when the base 62 is at the containing position to remove residual ink therefrom, and a scraper 78 for scraping residual ink off from the dielectric electrostatic detecting section 66 when the base 62 moves from the containing position to the operating position.
