PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical encoder capable of keeping both the intensity of current output and contrast high, and having a simple structure capable of avoiding contrast degradation in usage without requiring strict tilt adjustment in assembly. SOLUTION: This encoder has scale parts 14 and 15 including multiple gratings arranged along the moving direction (x-direction) of a movable object and a light source 11 for illuminating the scale parts, and is provided with an emitting means for emitting light from the gratings according to the movement of the movable object, and a light receiving means 16 for receiving the light emitted from the emitting means. The emitting means has optical systems 12 and 13 for converging the illumination light from the light source to the scale parts, and reshapes a cross-sectional shape of the illumination light in reaching the scale parts so as to shorten it more than the gratings in relation to the direction (y-direction) perpendicular to the moving direction.
