PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce a soot exhaust quantity while reducing an NOx exhaust quantity from a diesel engine. SOLUTION: Fuel is divided and injected at prescribed timing from an initial intake stroke to an initial expansion stroke and so that a final injection timing in the vicinity of a compression stroke top dead center, thereby attaining an NOx reduction. To perform post-injection of fuel after the completion of the division and injection, the fuel for post-injection is set so as to start at the time diffusion combustion of the divided and injected fuel is completed, thereby attaining a soot reduction.
