PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a non-asbestos-based friction material slight in emission of unnatural sound including squeakiness and having high abrasion resistance. SOLUTION: This non-asbestos-based friction material is obtained by molding and hardening a non-asbestos-based friction material composition comprising a fibrous base material except asbestos, a binder, an organic filler and an inorganic filler. It is characteristic that this friction material contains, as the abrasive material, at least one kind of inorganic material selected from inorganic materials >=4.5 in Moh's hardness and inorganic materials each having a Moh's hardness of <4.5 and containing >=50 wt.% of a component >=4.5 in Moh's hardness, and the volume ratio of the total organic material to the total abrasive material in the above composition is (1.5:1) to (3.5:1).
