PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a compact zoom lens having four lens groups as a whole in which chromatic aberration accompanying variable power is excellently corrected by using at least one diffraction optical element in one lens group. SOLUTION: This zoom lens has a first group of negative refracting power, a second group of positive refracting power, a third lens group of negative refracting power and a fourth group of positive refracting power in this order from an object side, and when an interval between an (i)th group and an (i+1)th group at a wide angle end is expressed as DiW and an interval between an (i)th group and an (i+1)th group at a telephoto end is expressed as DiT, variable power from the wide angle end to the telephoto end is performed by changing the interval between respective lens groups so as to satisfy the conditional expressions of (1) DIW>DIT, (2) D2W<D2T and (3) D3W>D3T, and the diffraction optical element is included at least in one lens group.
