PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide lining elements for constructing an underground structure, which prevent occurring of heaves and depressions of the ground when inserted into the natural ground, to thereby prevent a railroad or a road from undergoing roadbed deformation, and to provide a method for constructing an underground structure using the lining elements. SOLUTION: The method is carried out by arranging, side by side, a large number of the lining elements 2, 3, 3, etc., having joints 6, 9, 10, respectively, along a longitudinal direction from a starting side toward an arrival side, with the adjacent joints 6, 10 (or 9, 10) being fitted to each other, and sequentially inserting the elements into the natural ground, to thereby construct the underground structure. The joints 9 out of the joints 9, 10 of the lining element 3 which is precedently inserted into the natural ground, are to accept fitting of the joints 10 of the lining element 3 which is subsequently inserted into the natural ground. According to the method, joints 12 of a temporary cover element 11, which extend from both ends thereof along a longitudinal direction, are fitted to the joints 9. Thereafter, upon insertion of subsequent lining element into the natural ground, the temporary cover element 11 is squeezed out to the arrival side.
