PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a pickling apparatus by which the thickness of oxide in a hoop can be detected in a hoop transport line, and the transport speed (i.e., pickling time) of a strip passing through a pickling tank can be controlled in accordance with the detected scale thickness. SOLUTION: A magnetostriction measuring apparatus 30 disposed on a transport speed line of a strip 10 uses magnetostriction measuring apparatuses 20 as unit measuring elements. The magnetostriction measuring apparatuses 20 are confronted in a non-contact state to the face of the strip 10 at the inlet side or outlet side of a pickling tank 5, and are also fixedly arranged by 6 pieces in a line in the transport speed direction of the strip 10. The six magnetostriction measuring apparatuses 20 are allowed to cope with various scale thicknesses by deviating measuring frequencies (the measuring ranges in the depth direction of the sheet thickness) little by little.
