PURPOSE: To provide a measuring instrument and a measurement method for determining an averaging count (the count of measurement that is made automatically by the measuring instrument) in the measuring instrument for performing averaging processing (measurement is made automatically to a characteristic amount of one sample for a plurality of times, processing such as weighting is made, an average value is calculated from the measurement result of each time, and the value is outputted as the measurement result of the sample) while managing both required measurement accuracy and measurement efficiency. CONSTITUTION: A standard deviation σi when one of a plurality of samples is measured for a plurality of times, a standard deviation σs obtained for the plurality of samples, an initial value N0 of an averaging count, and a desired indefinite element ratio ε1 are used to calculate 1/ε12.(σi/ σs)2.N0, and an integer that is not smaller than the calculation result is adopted as an averaging count N. Then, averaging processing is made to each of the plurality of samples for the averaging count N and at the same time, measurement is made, thus calculating the standard deviation σs.
