The gear shift assembly for a vehicle gearbox has a sliding gate (5) to guide the gear shift lever (4) into the various gear selection paths (1-5,RW). A bending spring (1) acts as a barrier at the fifth gear into the reverse gear (RW) path, which has to be overcome on selecting the reverse function. One end of the spring is attached to the sliding gate, and a kinked section (7-9) of the spring extends into the movement path of the gear shift lever, to press the gear lever into the neutral path (N) when it comes out of the fifth gear setting, so that reverse can only be selected from the neutral position against the spring..
