When setting an optimal laser output, an optimal initial recording output data to be supplied to a laser driving circuit (2) is obtained through a control operation of a laser control circuit. The optimal initial recording output data is then stored. When switching from a reproducing mode to a recording mode, the optimal initial recording output data designated through the setting of the optimal laser output is supplied to the laser driving circuit (2) while feedback control is prohibited.
