SOLUTION: In the method for forming an optical element in which a glass blank 10 is heated and pressed between a first die member 2 having a first forming surface 2A and a second die member 6 having a second forming surface 6A to form an optical element having the shape of the first forming surface transferred to its first surface and the shape of the second forming surface transferred to its second surface, the first die member 2 is supported on a support member 4 for supporting the first die member, the support member 4 is held in such a way that the axes of the support member 4 and the second die member 6 coincide with each other and the first die member is made slidable on the support member when the first die member and the support member are heated.
