PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a highly reliability and highly precise optical wave guide device which satisfies both requests for uniformization of optical coupling between respective output ports, and the miniaturization of the whole device, and is freely applicable to various kinds of useful applications, and to provide a method for guiding optical wave. SOLUTION: The optical wave guide device is provided with an input waveguide 1 which makes incident light to be in a single optical mode, a plurality of output waveguides 2 which power-divides and outputs the incident light, and a tapered waveguide 3 which connects the input waveguide 1 with the output waveguides 2, and becomes gradually wide from the input waveguide 1 to each output waveguide 2. The tapered waveguide 3 is constituted so as to have the sufficient angle of the taper to cause a non-adiabatic state, namely, to combine an optical mode of a lower order with an optical mode of a higher order while light is propagated in the tapered waveguide 3. |
