PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a sulfinyl group-substituted methine dye in high yield, and to provide an excellent method for producing a methine dye having dissociable group. SOLUTION: This method for producing a sulfinyl group-substituted methine dye of the general formula 2 comprises treating a thio group-substituted methine dye of the general formula 1 with an oxidizing agent. The other objective method for producing a methine dye having dissociable group comprises making a condensation synthesis of a methine dye in a condition that protects the dissociable group therein and deprotecting the dissociable group in the resultant dye. Specifically, for example, the following compounds (dye 1-1 and dye 2-1) are produced respectively.
