1291930 Quaternary ammonium hydrogen sulphates HASSLE AB 11 June 1970 [12 June 1969] 28422/70 Heading C2C Novel quaternary ammonium hydrogen sulphates having the general formula wherein R<SP>2</SP> is a (C 3 -C 6 ) alkyl group or an aryl group, R<SP>1</SP> is a (C 1 -C 6 ) alkyl group, provided that when R<SP>2</SP> is a (C3- C 6 ) alkyl group R<SP>1</SP> is also a (C 3 -C 6 ) alkyl group, are prepared either by (i) hydrolysing a quaternary ammonium alkyl sulphate of the formula wherein R is a (C 1 -C 4 ) alkyl group, with water in the presence of a strong mineral acid as catalyst; (ii) reacting a compound of the formula wherein A- is a lipophilic anion of a weak acid HA such as a polyhalogenophenol or a long chain fatty acid such as oleic acid, with sulphuric acid; (iii) reacting a compound of the formula with sulphuric acid; (iv) reacting a compound of the formula with a compound of the formula wherein X- is a halogen, alkylsulphate, perchlorate or arylsulphonate group and Q is an ammonium ion; or (v) reacting a compound of the formula with sulphuric acid in the presence of hydrogen peroxide. The compounds are useful as intermediates for the preparation of other quaternary ammonium salts, many examples of which are given. |
