PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a constitution having excellent grip holding properties and fishing line operating efficiency in a double bearing reel for fishing of the type in which the front, rear and upper sides of the spool are opened between side plates of the reel body. SOLUTION: This double bearing reel for fishing is composed so as to open the front, rear and upper sides of the spool 5a freely rotatably supported between side plates of the reel body 1 and to wind a fishing line on the spool 5a by rotating operation of a handle 11 provided in one of the side plates 2b. The double bearing reel for fishing is characterized in that the side plate 2a on the side opposite to the side of the handle 11 of the reel body 1 is formed into a nearly circular shape and the relationships between the outside diameter D and the inner width L between the left and the right side plates are L<=D/2, L>=20 mm and D<=80 mm.
