PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve an operating mechanism for a gas spring device. SOLUTION: This gas spring device 19 has a valve rod 26 inserted so as to penetrate a central hole 24a of a valve mechanism 24, a transmitting mechanism 27 transmitting operating force from outside to the valve rod 26 to open the valve mechanism 24, a piston 28 connected to the upper end of a rod 22, and a cylinder 30 inserted in the inside of an outer cylinder 20 to slide the piston 28. The transmitting mechanism 27 has a swivel member 31 inserted in the inside 29a of a cylindrical unit 29 and a lift member 33 inserted in the inside 29a of the cylindrical unit 29 to be axially pressed down by tilting the swivel member 31. In the case of adjusting the height of a chair, by turning an operating dial, the swivel member 31 is inclined, to make the valve rod 26 of the valve mechanism 24 operate to open a value downward. Thus, an operating system for turn-operating the operating dial can be adopted and a freedom degree of a design can be enhanced.
